Ask these questions:

1. What are my options?

This question asks the health professional to list all the options. This helps you know how many options you have. There are at least two options, one is “wait and watch”.

 

2. What are the possible benefits and harms of those options?

This question asks to learn about the benefits and harms (outcomes) of each option. Antibiotics may be an option. A benefit may be getting better quicker. A harm may be diarrhoea, nausea or being sick (vomiting).

3. How likely are each of those benefits and harms to happen to me?

This question asks to know the chance (probability) you will get the benefits or harms of the options? The answer will take into account your medical history. It will note things you may be more likely to get (your risk factors).

Common health decisions people make are, whether to:

  • have a screening or diagnostic test
  • have a medical procedure
  • have a surgical procedure
  • take a medicine
  • make a lifestyle change.
